Pope’s tweet draws 50,000 new followers


July 05, 2011: Pope Benedict XVI’s first tweet has catapulted the Vatican’s presence on the micro-blogging social network, Twitter to new hights, adding some 50,000 followers to the English-language account, reported the Catholic News Agency.

Thousands of Twitter users re-tweeted the Pope’s announcement on Wednesday, June 28, that launched the Vatican News website news.va, and thousands more subscribed to the Vatican’s English Language twitter account. The English channel follower account stood at over 65,000 as of Friday evening, an increase of 54,000 from the period before the Pope’s message.

The growth of the Vatican’s English Language twitter channel was massive compared to the Vatican’s twitter accounts in other languages, the report added.

The Spanish-language channel has about 11,000 followers, while the Italian language channel sits at about 3,500.
