(July 02, 2011) Cardinal Angelo Amato prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of
Saints, is going to preside as Papal Legate on Sunday at the beatification of the
Servant of God, Janos Scheffler, at Satu Mare in Romania. The servant of God was
born on 29th October 1887 at Kalmand, a village belonging at that time
to Hungary, as the second of 10 children of a family of Catholic farmers. Since the
age of 10, Janos had a strong inclination to the priesthood and so he entered the
seminary at Satu Mare and after theological studies at Budapest he was ordained priest
on 19th June 1912. Because of his qualities, he was sent to Rome where
he graduated with the highest qualifications in Canon Law. On 17th Ma
1942 he was consecrated as Bishop of Satu Mare, his birthplace. In 1944 Satu Mare
was invaded by the Soviet red army. The regime wanted to separate the church in Romania
from Rome. Because he refused to bend to the regime he was arrested on 23rd
May 1950. In 1952 he died in the prison of Bucharest. In 1965 his mortal remains were
transferred to the crypt of the Satu Mare Cathedral.
