Pope to inaugurate Vatican’s news portal with a tablet

(June 27, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI will be the first visitor to the new news information portal of the Vatican when on Tuesday he will inaugurate it not with a PC but with a tablet, a Vatican official said on Monday. The occasion is the 60th anniversary of the Pope’s priestly ordination, which falls on Wednesday, June 29th, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Pope Benedict was ordained priest that day in 1951 in the cathedral of Freising, Germany, along with his elder brother, Georg Ratzinger. “It is our wish that this important initiative of the Holy See in the communications field, be a homage, and even more, the expression of our fidelity and dedication to the Holy Father on the occasion of the 60 anniversary of his priestly ordination,” said Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, the president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Social Communications, while presenting the news portal at a press conference in the Vatican on Monday. The Pope will inaugurate the news portal on Tuesday, and it will be open to the public on Wednesday, June 29. The news portal will for the first time bring together information from the Vatican's various print, online, radio and television media in a one-stop-shop for Holy See news.
