Sudan threatens to shut down pipelines to South Sudan
Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir on Tuesday threatened to shut down the pipelines
that transfer oil from the landlocked South to Port Sudan on the Red Sea unless a
revenue sharing deal is reached by next month. His remarks are the latest sign
of tension between the central government and South Sudan, which is scheduled to declare
independence in just over two weeks. On Monday, the two sides signed an agreement
on Monday to demilitarize the disputed central region of Abyei and allow an Ethiopian
peacekeeping force to move in. Susan E. Rice, the US ambassador to the United
Nations, welcomed the pact vowed to introduce a UN Security Council resolution authorizing
the deployment of the Ethiopian force. Listen:
