Fighting has continued along the border of North and South Sudan, despite a reported
deal to demilitarize the area. Clashes were reported in the oil-rich town of Abyei,
days after President Omar al-Bashir said he would withdraw his forces from the region.
Sudan's army, however, has vowed to continue fighting in the oil-producing border
state of Southern Kordofan, with the goal of ending what the North’s military considers
to be a armed insurrection. The United Nations has urged the North’s government in
Khartoum to open the airspace over Southern Kordofan state to allow humanitarian aid
to reach the scores of thousands of people who have been driven from their homes by
the fighting.
