Members of “Talitha Kum” the International Network of Consecrated Life Against Trafficking
in Persons have ended their coordination meeting in Rome. Participants from across
the globe were busy drawing up a plan of action for the coming two years, exchanging
information and sharing experience in their aim to prevent the trafficking of persons
and to assist victims of a growing criminal phenomen.
Linda Bordoni spoke
to Good Shepherd Sister Mirjam Beike, a German-born Sister who works as a missionary
in Albania before the meeting ended. She spoke of the nature of persons trafficking
in Albania, which she says is mainly focussed on prostitution, and pointed out that
women are not only being trafficked outside of the country, but also from poorer,
rural areas, to big cities inside the country. She spoke of the work of the sisters
committed to helping the victims and preventing the crime, and of the importance of
coordination between the sisters across the globe. Sister Mirjam also said Albania
has a good law in the prevention of persons trafficking, but it needs more instruments,
both economic and cultural, to be able to implement it properly … listen...
