Bi-centenary celebration of the Birth of St John Nepomucene
(June 11, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI has issued an Apostolic Letter addressed to his
special Legate to the bi-centenary celebrations of the birth of St John Nepomucene
Neumann, to be held at Prachatice in the Czech republic on Saturday 18th
June. In it he writes to Cardinal Justin F. Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, summing
up the history of this Redemptorist Bishop who had left his native land to serve in
the new Federation of the America, the present USA: Born in Bohemia in 1811. Becoming
the Bishop of Philadelphia, he dedicated himself to the spiritual and social welfare
of the Catholic immigrants and to the teaching of Christian doctrine to the youth.
And by dint of hard pastoral work he lifted the morale of the Catholic population
and saved them from the snares that lured them away from their Catholic faith. The
Pope then referred to the request made to him by the Bishop of Budweis, the south
Bohemnian diocese of the Czech Republic. In answer to that request the Pope was appointing
as his special legate for the celebrations the Archbishop of Philadelphia Cardinal
Rigali.
