(June 4, 2011) “Intelligent use of natural capital can boost sustainable poverty
reduction, and food security”, said the Secretary General of the United Nations,
Ban Ki Moon, in his message for World environment Day, to be held on Sunday, 5th
June. He went on to say that India, the global host of world Environment Day 2011,
is among a growing number of countries working to address the pressures of ecological
change. It is also helping to pioneer a better assessment of the economic value of
nature-based services, with the assistance of UNEP and the World Bank. India’s Rural
Employment Act, and the country’s encouragement of renewable Energy are significant
examples of how to scale up green growth and accelerate the transition to a green
economy . In 2011 the dominant theme is: “Forests, nature at your service”. India
will be the centre of celebrations of this Day, with events in New Delhi and Bangalore.
Sunday will witness the World 10 km Race by 25 thousand runners on the pavements
of Bangalore in support of the Day which has as its logo-symbol the Bengal Tiger.
The same day the report of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will
be issued titled “The Forests in a green economy”. Confronted by deforestation (currently
estimated at 5,2 million hectares every year all over the world) the report assures
the increase of public and private investment for the managment of forests and forest
resources.
