Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music completes centenary
(May 31, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI expressed appreciation and praise for the work
of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music celebrating its 100th anniversary this
year. In a letter of congratulations and good wishes to Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski,
Grand Chancellor of the Institute, the Pope said “One hundred years have passed since
my predecessor Saint Pius X founded the School of Sacred music, that was raised to
the Pontifical Institute after twenty years by Pope Pius XI.” This important anniversary
is cause for joy to all lovers of sacred music but particularly for those pastors
of the Church, who care about the dignity of the liturgy, of which sacred music is
an integral part,” the Pope said in his letter dated 13 May, that was officially
released by the Vatican on Tuesday. Pope Benedict encouraged Cardinal Grocholewski
to continue with renewed commitment in his service to the Institute of sacred music,
and in the professional training of students, so they get a serious and deep expertise
in the various disciplines of sacred music. Thus, the Pontifical Institute will continue
to offer a valuable contribution to training in this field of pastors and laity in
the various churches. It will also help to encourage a proper discernment of quality
musical compositions used for liturgical celebrations, said Pope Benedict . He concluded
saying they could count on his care and support to achieve these important goals.
