(May 13, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his closeness with those affected
by the earthquake that hit southeast Spain in quick succession on Wednesday, killing
at least 10 people, injuring dozens and causing major damage to buildings. The epicentre
of the quakes, with magnitudes of 4.4 and 5.2, was close to the town of Lorca. Vatican
Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone sent a message on behalf of the Pope
to Bishop José Manuel Lorca Planes of Cartagena, saying the Poep heard about the earthquake
and expressed special closeness with those affected, offering prayers for the eternal
repose of the dead and imploring comfort and Christian hope from the Almighty for
those suffering this harsh adversity. At the same time the Pontiff encouraged institutions
and people of good will to show solidarity and fraternal charity to individuals and
families in difficulty. The Pope urged the bishop of Cartagena to convey his condolences
to the families of the victims, the injured and all those affected by the disaster.
