“I want to start a new series of catechesis on a subject that is very dear to us all:
the topic of prayer.” With these simple words Pope Benedict XVI at the beginning of
May introduced the subject of a new topic for his catechesis during his weekly General
Audiences. Over the past two years Pope Benedict has been exploring the lives of the
saints. That series of talks concluded last month, and hence on May 6th
the Pope announced the subject of the new topic saying it is based on the request
of the disciples to Christ, “Lord, teach us to pray”. “Because we know that prayer
cannot be taken for granted, we must learn to pray, as if gaining back this art. Even
those who are very advanced in the spiritual life – the Pope said - always feel the
need to get to school to learn to pray to Jesus with authenticity.” Picking up
on that theme, father Jim Brand, brings us the first in his own series of meditations
on prayer with a reflection on how you and I have been spoken into being, and that
every human person is a unique, divine statement…
