(May 07, 2011) Education implies the joining of all forces to build Christian life
founded on the Gospel and the Teaching of the Church, giving a place of honour to
the integral vision of the human person, said Pope Benedict XVI to the 14th
General Assembly of Italian Catholic Action, being held in Rome from 6th
to 8th May. The theme of the Assembly is “To live the faith, to love life”
which spells out the educational commitment of Catholic Action. The Pope upheld the
centenarian tradition of Catholic Action to educate youth from childhood to maturity.
Recalling the memory of saintly examples of Italian youth such as Blessed Pier Giorgio
Frassati and others, The Holy Father spoke of the necessity to make “Sanctity” a common
word and not something exceptional, which does not mean only a heroic state of Christian
life but points to the day to day openness to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Pope
Benedict then dealt with the training of Christians to cultural and political commitment.
Sanctity means working for the common good, rendering meaningful service in the
city, according to the teaching of the Church, with thinking forged by the gospel.
This should manifest itself in the daily lives of fathers and mothers, faced with
the educational challenges of today. Speaking of the current upheavals in the world
and particularly in the Mediterranean area, the Pope called for the spirit of welcome
and solidarity towards those looking for a better future denied in their own native
lands. He also recalled the 150 years marking Italian unity during which Catholic
Action had made a valid contribution. Young Italian Christians were called upon to
offer with conviction the beauty of their culture and the reasons of their faith,
so that beyond the work of fraternal solidarity, Italy may help Europe to face up
to the current epochal .challenges in the whole world.
