Pope says sacred texts must be interpreted correctly
(May 05, 2011) “It is essential and fundamental for the life and the mission of
the church that the sacred texts are interpreted correctly, ” Pope Benedict XVI
said in a message on Thursday to the plenary assembly of Vatican’s Pontifical Biblical
Commission. The Pope’s message was addressed to the Biblical Commission’s President
Cardinal William Levada. “Inspiration and truth of the Bible” was the theme of the
plenary assembly. The Pope stressed that the words contained in the sacred texts
must always be taken as the fruit of inspiration coming from God, and must be explained
rightly, so it can be truly fruitful for the life and mission of the Church. The
Pope expressed appreciation for the work done by the Biblical Commission to promote
awareness, understanding and acceptance of the Word of God in the world.
