Lombardi Editorial - John Paul II as seen by Pope Benedict XVI
John Paul II as seen by Benedict XVI
Pope Benedict XVI is the first Pope of
modern times to be able to Beatify his predecessor, a man for whom he was one of the
main collaborators for over two decades. Amid the countless voices talking to us about
John Paul II in recent days, it is right to listen in particular to Pope Benedict,
especially the wonderful interview he granted to Polish Television just a few months
after the death of Pope John Paul II.
“With regard to the world, he created
a new awareness for the need for the religious dimension in man”, said Pope Benedict.
“All Christians have recognised – despite differences – that the Bishop of Rome was
the spokesman of Christianity. He was the spokesman of the great values of humanity
for non Christians and other religions too.” And then, “he knew how to infuse enthusiasm
for Christ in young people. That youth has become enthusiastic for Christ and for
the Church and for difficult values. It was his personality and charisma that helped
mobilize the youth of the world for the cause of God and for the love of Christ.”
Finally “he was the man of the Council, he helped us be the Church of our times and
of the future”.
God, Jesus Christ, unity of Christians, dialogue between religions
for the good of the person and of all mankind: these, from the very first day of his
Pontificate, have been Pope Benedict’s priorities. It’s the legacy that he picks up
from his predecessor. Not only as an indication of his agenda, but as a powerful spiritual
inspiration, drawn from his testimony and his living and constant spiritual presence
on the journey of the people of God.
