Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli speaks about Christians in Libya
Pope Benedict XVI called for diplomacy and dialogue to replace the use of arms in
the current conflict in Libya during his Urbi et Orbi message on Easter. He also
asked those suffering as a result of the current conflict to be given access to humanitarian
aid. There are still many Christians in Libya, especially among the expatriate community.
Many of them serve in the health care sector.
“I express my deep gratitude
to our Christian people who are celebrating Easter in Libya, giving the power of love
and service to our Libyan people who are suffering in different ways, especially the
people who are in the hospitals,” said Bishop Giovanni Martinelli, Apostolic Vicar
of Tripoli and president of Caritas Libya.
“I would live to express my gratitude
to them, especially the Filipinos, and the families in the Philippines., and the families
in different parts of the world,” he told Vatican Radio “This is a joy to understand
the Church is not absent, and in this context, it present by the service of love.”
