Pope Benedict’s inter-religious peace meet in Assisi, Oct. 27
(April 04, 2011) The Vatican on Saturday released the preliminary program of the
day that Pope Benedict XVI and representatives of world religions will spend together
in prayer for peace in the central Italian town of Assisi on October 27 this year.
The day is in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the first historic meeting
that took place in Assisi on 27 October 1986, convoked by late Pope John Paul II.
A Vatican statement said Pope Benedict intends to hold a day of reflection, dialogue
and prayer for peace and justice in the world, making a pilgrimage to the home of
Saint Francis and inviting fellow Christians from different denominations, representatives
of the world’s religious traditions and, in some sense, all men and women of good
will, to join him once again on this journey. Pope Benedict had announced the
day of reflection, dialogue and prayer on the Church’s World Day of Peace this year
on January 1st, while speaking about the value of religious freedom to
bring peace in the world. Dedicated to the theme, “Pilgrims of truth, pilgrims of
peace,” the day will begin with Pope Benedict and the delegations setting off form
Rome by train on the morning of 27 October. Upon arrival the Basilica of S. Maria
degli Angeli in Assisi, participants will explore the theme of the day and deliver
speeches. After sharing a simple ‘frugal’ meal in solidarity with the suffering of
so many men and women who do not know peace, they will then proceed to the hilltop
Basilica of Saint Francis, where they will make a joint commitment to peace.
