On this the penultimate day of a meeting discussing youth ministry, being held in
Nicosia, participants heard from leaders of the Orthodox church in Cyprus.
Metropolitan
TAMASSOU ISAIAS spoke to Catholic Church leaders from South-Eastern Europe about the
importance of the pastoral care of young people for the orthodox church.
Afterwards
he spoke to Philippa Hitchen about the organisation he heads which helps youth people
addicted to drugs and alcohol, saying “unfortunately we have a dramatic increase of
drug abuse, alcohol, smoking and uncontrolled internet.”
He adds of course
the reasons are many, but the church is standing up and is trying to co-operate in
all involved institutions and departments of the government to help.”
The meeting
under the auspices of the CCEE, the Council of European Bishops Conferences ends on
Sunday. Listen
