Pope Benedict XVI meets the Philippine Bishops during the Ad Limina Visit
(March 03, 2011) Pope Benedict XVI in his address to the Philippine Bishops stressed
on the necessity of Catechetical formation, formation of young priests and on-going
care of priests. He was speaking to them on Thursday in Rome during their Ad Limina
visit. The visit ad Limina means, the obligation of the Bishops of visiting Rome
at stated times, to the "thresholds of the Apostles" Sts. Peter and Paul, and of presenting
themselves before the pope to give an account of the state of their dioceses. The
Pontiff placed before the Bishops the challenge they face of ongoing catechetical
formation. He added that the deep personal piety of the people needs to be nourished
and supported by a profound understanding of and appreciation for the teachings of
the Church in matters of faith and morals. While appreciating their work, the Pope
thanked the many religious sisters and lay catechists who assist them in this important
work. Pope Benedict made a special mention of the programs of continuing formation
for young priests, assisting them in their transition from the structured schedule
of the seminary to the more independent setting of parish life. He added that it
is also helpful for them to have mentors from among those older priests who would
provide proper guidance. Speaking about the ongoing care for all priests, the Pope
said that regular days of recollection, yearly retreats and convocations, as well
as programs for continuing education and assistance for priests who may be facing
difficulties, are to be promoted. The Pontiff then invited them to profit from the
yearly celebration of Holy Thursday, during which the Church commemorates the priesthood
in a special way. Finally, he encouraged them by means of the dialogue that has been
established, to continue to promote the path to true and lasting peace with all their
neighbours, accepting them as persons created in the image of God.
