In Ireland, a liturgy of Lament and Repentance for the sexual abuse of children by
priests and religious was held Sunday in St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Dublin, within the
framework of the Apostolic Visitation of the Archdiocese as mandated by Pope Benedict
XVI.
Presided over by Papal visitor Card. Sean O Malley of Boston and Archbishop
Diarmuid Martin of Dublin, today’s’ is the last of the group, following December's
Visitor-led penance in Tuam cathedral and last month's services in the archdioceses
of Armagh and
Deputy editor of the Irish Catholic newspaper, Michael
Kelly, attended the liturgy and spoke to Emer McCarthy afterwards of an "intense atmosphere".
He underscored that the service was organised by abuse survivors, and quoted Archbishop
Martin's words that this is just the "first step in a long process". Listen:
