India’s largest University sets up chair on Mother Teresa
(February 17, 2011) The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) has announced
the establishment of a ‘Mother Teresa Chair’ at India's largest institution of higher
education: Indira Gandhi National Open University. The CBCI in a press statement on
February 16 quoted the university circular saying that in addition to conducting the
Master of Social Work (MSW) program, the occupant of the Mother Teresa Chair will
promote studies on HIV, refugees, displaced people, street children, and care for
vulnerable people in other sectors of society. The university circular also pointed
out that the Mother Teresa chair will impart training for welfare providers, celebrate
Mother Teresa’s August 26 Birthday as National Philanthropic Day, and institute awards
for social service. “This is an honour for Mother Teresa and the church,” said Father
Babu Joseph, CBCI spokesperson.
