Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak has resigned the presidency after three decades in power. The
Higher Military Council of Egypt is in control of the country, with defence minister
Mohamed Hussein Tantawi at its head.
We reached the Apostolic Nuncio in Cairo,
Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, who told us he hopes the euphoria of the moment will
translate into real reforms that respond to the legitimate aspirations of the people
of Egypt. “We would hope that the [Higher Military Counci] that has now taken over…will
also reposnd…to the other demands of the population,” he said.
Earlier on Friday,
Egypt's military gave guarantees promised democratic reforms would be carried out.
