Today marks the inauguration of the United Nations International Year of Forests under
the slogan “Forests For People”. It also coincides with the release of the UN Food
and Agriculture Organisation’s biennial report on the state of the world’s forests.
This
International Year aims to raise awareness of the vital role forests play in a number
of important issues facing the planet today, such as climate change.
“The overall
picture knowing our dependence from nature and in this sense from forests is still
weak”, says
Speaking to Vatican Radio, Mr Rojas-Briales also stresses the
importance of forests in the fight against hunger and poverty by, as he says, “highlighting
and strengthening the capacity of forests to provide livelihoods to populations.”
