Indonesia has downgraded the alert level at Mount Bromo, a volcano often visited by tourists. The
mountain started shooting ash high into the air two weeks ago. Authorities had
issued a high alert and warned villagers and tourists to stay off its rumbling slopes.
But
the state volcanologist said volcanic activity had sharply declined, although people
were still advised to stay at least 2 kilometers from the crater.
“The earthquake
went into the background because the volcanoes keep erupting”, says the Regional Co-ordinator
for Caritas Asia, Father Bonnie Mendes.
He adds that these constant eruptions
pose a real challenge for aid agencies because they are becoming active in different
place which he says is a new phenomenon. Listen
