Earlier this week Pope Benedict XVI received the Irish delegation in charge of organising
the International Eucharistic Congress in the capital Dublin in 2012. He spoke to
them about the congress being an essential part of the journey of renewal of the Church
there. Also this week the Vatican announced the beginning of the first phase of the
Apostolic Visitation to the Irish Church, called for by the Pope in the wake of the
Murphy and Ryan reports into the abuse of minors by members of the clergy. Fr.
Kevin Doran is the president of the organising committee for Dublin 2012. He told
Emer McCarthy that the Congress couldn’t come at a better time, adding that “many
of the problems that we face are to do with the failure of communion.” The Eucharistic
Congress he says, is a chance to “rebuild the communion that has been broken through
the thirst for power and the desire for excessive profit which we have seen in the
banking collapse, through the desire for power and control which has prevented the
church from hearing the cry of those who have been abused.” Listen
