Ethics at the cutting edge of scientific endeavour
The 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication
Technologies comes to a close in Rome today (Wednesday).
The conference aims
at creating a stage where researchers, scientists and business people can discuss
and share ideas at the frontiers of life sciences, pure sciences and engineering.
An
electrical engineer and the co-inventor of the bionic eye, Prof. Tamas Roska of the
Pazmany P Catholic University in Hungary took part in the three-day conference, and
told Vatican Radio that the Pope's voice is an important one in the discussion of
how to manage ethical tensions on the scientific frontier. “The 6th chapter
of [Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical letter] Caritas in veritate is a wonderful, very
deep, scientifically very sound analysis of the challenge – of the moral challenges
of high technologies, including biotechnologies,” he said.
The ISABEL conference
took place in Rome from the 7th to the 10th of November.
