(Oct.26,2010) A Church-run radio station is trying to reach remote Sri Lankan villages
by promoting awareness of its programs among children. Radio Veritas Asia, RVA and
Social Communication Commission in Kurunegala diocese, jointly organized a program
recently at Holy Angels’ Girls’ School in Kuliyapitiya, a Buddhist majority city in
northwestern Sri Lanka. Bishop Harold Anthony Perera said “Many listeners from other
faiths tune in to Radio Veritas in the villages, and we need to promote awareness
among various age groups. Hundreds of village children listening to RVA, have participated
in the program featuring short story writing, essay writing and painting competitions.
According to Fr. Placidus de Silva, director of the communication commission, current
topics were given to upper and primary school children, including Christian faith
values, human rights, peace and harmony. Children were given three months to prepare
for the program at home and at Sunday classes. Some 80 children received awards during
the program that also included cultural shows and RVA dramas. RVA’s Sinhala Service
was launched in 1976. It continues to spread the Good News, binding together not only
Sri Lankans nationwide, but all over Asia.
