Pope establishes Pontifical Council for New Evangelization
(Oct.12,2010) Pope Benedict XVI issued a document on Tuesday establishing the Pontifical
Council for New Evangelization. The Papal letter “Motu Proprio” entitled “Ubicumque
et Semper,” Latin for “Everywhere and always,” sets out the purpose and authority
of the new Pontifical Council, which is designed to promote the spread of the Gospel,
especially in regions that were once predominantly Christian but have been heavily
influenced by secularization. Pope Benedict revealed his plans for the new office
in June, and appointed Archbishop Renato Fisichella to be its first president. The
Papal document said the Church has a duty always and everywhere to proclaim the Gospel
of Jesus Christ. It noted that in recent decades, various social transformations
have taken place due to advances in science and technology; profound changes in the
economic fields; the rapid process of mixing of races and cultures and the growing
interdependence between peoples due to globalization. It said that while Humanity
has known undeniable benefits from these changes, there has also been a disturbing
loss of the sacred :The Papal document stressed that only a new evangelization can
assure the growth of a clear and deep faith to face the new challenges.
