Scientists have warned that a massive solar flare in 2013 could cause global chaos
by triggering power blackouts and wrecking satellite communications. But how real
is this threat? And have modern societies become too dependent on technology that
leaves them vulnerable to such events? Susy Hodges finds out more from Astronomer
Brother Guy Consolmagno from the Vatican Observatory ....
"...there
is some evidence for a storm, possibly 2 storms simultaneously, occuring on the sun
in a direction where it could encounter the earth and it could create problems...." "..
the ...thing that is new is that since the last solar maximus we have adopted so much
technology involving wi-fi, cellphones etc... so we really don't know what the effect
of a solar storm is going to be...." "... everything is possible, whether it's
likely is another issue ..... "I don't know of any way that you can completely protect
the earth from it....." ".... the real answer is to have more than one way of communicating
so we don't have all our eggs in one basket ...."
