Anti death penalty campaigners react to Virginia execution
Anti Death penalty campaigners have been reacting today following the execution of
a woman in the US state of Virginia. Teresa Lewis was the first woman to be put
to death in the state in almost 100 years. The 41 year old who had learning difficulties,
conspired to murder her husband and stepson in 2002. The US Supreme Court and Virginia's
governor refused to stop her execution. Caroline Morten from the UK based organisation
Reprieve, which works against the death penalty, spoke of her sadness at the execution
of Teresa Lewis and said the “death penalty is not only inhumane but also inherently
unfair.” She also told Vatican Radio that “violence just breeds violence.”
