US President Barack Obama has urged commitment to the Middle East peace talks, and
asked regional players to support the process. He made the call at the 65th
session of the UN General Assembly. The President came to the UN on Thursday to
urge world leaders to get behind the Middle East peace process. The president said
that an agreement to create an independent Palestine and a secure Israel could be
achieved within a year. But in order to do this Obama said Israeli and Palestinian
leaders needed compromise and take serious action in the quest for peace saying “we
know there will be tests along the way”. President Obama had strong words for
Iran calling on Tehran to cooperate with the international community, end its nuclear
program, and return to talks. The door, he said remained “open to diplomacy should
Iran choose to walk through it.” This was the first day of the 65th
UN general assembly which will continue over the next week and will include fringe
discussions on international hotspots such as Somalia, Yemen and Sudan as well as
issues such as climate change and UN reform.
