Aid agencies say almost half of the population of the African nation of Niger desperately
needs food and up to one in six children are suffering from acute malnutrition. Susy
Hodges finds out more about this under-reported hunger crisis from Land Hartill of
Catholic Relief Services who was recently in Niger..
"... Right now, the hunger
crisis is severe ..... there's actually food in the markets but no one can afford
to buy it.... the situation is very bad and will probably get worse before it gets
better....women I met were eating millet husks --- and unless the root causes are
addressed we will see this happen (again) down the road...."
