The highlight of this papal visit to Britain was Sunday's beatification of Cardinal
Newman, the 19th century theologian and convert. The significance of this event
is underlined by the fact that it marked the first time that Pope Benedict has personally
beatified a person since his election to the papacy. It was the inexplicable healing
of an American deacon from a crippling spine disorder that paved the way for Newman's
beatification. Susy Hodges spoke to that deacon, Jack Sullivan, about what happened
to him after he prayed to Cardinal Newman.....
"...I was in..total constant
agony......and then suddenly I felt a tremendous sensation of intense, very strong
heat and a very, very strong tingling feeling all over my body....
… and I
started to walk normally, I had no more pain….....he (my doctor) said there was no
medical, scientific explanation for what had happened to me… it was a miracle...."
