Praise to the holiest


In an effort to find out more about Cardinal John Henry Newman's "Praise to the holiest in the height" , part of his dramatic poem "The Dream of Gerontius"..." we join music historian Monsignor Philip Whitmore in a programme produced by Veronica Scarisbrick.

"...as they approach they hear the angelic choirs singing in the distance...Elgar obviously believed there would be music in heaven .."

.."Elgar's setting of Newman's "Dream of Geronitius " was composed in 1900 and first performed in Birmingham . Three years later it received its first London performance.. in the newly opened Westminster Cathedral..."
