Caritas renews appeal for Pakistan, says 21 million affected
(Sept.14,2010) Caritas Internationalis, the group of Catholic relief and development
agencies, has renewed its appeal for flood-ravaged Pakistan. “Flooding has caused
damage and displacement in a fifth of the country, and left 21 million people affected,”
Caritas noted in a statement on Tuesday. It said “As the rains continued in August,
the flooding began to reach Sindh in the southern part of Pakistan. Over 4 million
people have been affected in Sindh alone, and over 300,000 houses demolished, while
50,000 acres of agricultural land is under water,” Caritas added. Caritas said
10 million Euros are needed to reach 350,000 people affected by the worst flooding
in living memory. Caritas will be providing shelter, food, clean water, sanitation,
health-care, infrastructure rebuilding and protection for vulnerable groups, especially
women and children
