(September 4, 2010) Pope Benedict XVI is paying a visit this morning to Carpineto
Romano, a town some 60 kms southeast of Rome, to pay homage to Pope Leo XIII on the
occasion of the 200th birth anniversary of 19th century pope
in the town. Pope Leo XIII who was born Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci on March 2, 1810
and died on July 20, 1903 was the Catholic Church’s 256th pontiff. He is known for
"Rerum Novarum, the encyclical on which is based the social doctrine of the Church.
Pope Leo also made former Anglican chaplain of Oxford University Henry Newman a cardinal,
whom Pope Benedict XVI will beatify during his visit to the United Kingdom, Sept.
16-19. Pope Benedict will fly in a helicopter from the papal summer residence of
Castel Gandolfo, outside Rome, to Carpineto Romano, and after an open-air Mass in
the town’s main square will return to Castel Gandolfo where he is scheduled to hold
the weekly midday ‘Angelus’ prayer and deliver his blessing.
