Taliban attacks Pakistan flood relief programme

(August 30, 2010) Suspected Taliban terrorists have killed three aid workers helping flood victims in Pakistan’s Swat Valley and seriously injured others, according to a Catholic priest. Australian-born Columban priest, Fr. Robert McCulloch reported from Hyderabad in Pakistan that the attacks occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday in the past week. The attacks were aimed at stopping flood relief activities being carried out by the Pakistan government, the military and international aid organizations, Fr McCulloch said. In addition to the death of the three aid workers, the Taliban or Taliban-styled terrorists looted and set fire to shops and houses in an attempt to regain control of towns in the Swat Valley. According to Martin Tuelan, the executive officer of Australian charity, Catholic Mission, the Taliban and affiliated extremists not only attack federal and provincial government ministers in the Swat Valley but also target foreign aid workers and Christians as part of their attempts to destabilise the Pakistani government. However, Tuelan commended aid workers in Pakistan for their courage and resilience and their refusal to halt their efforts to help the more than 20 million who have been displaced by freak monsoon rains and who are now at risk.
