ACN helps flood victims in Pakistan


(Aug.10,2010) The Catholic Charity “Aid to the Church in Need”- ACN, is providing emergency help to victims of the floods in Pakistan. The interim relief package will be sent to the Religious Sisters, coordinating aid programs in the northern town of Nowshera, one of the worst affected areas. The first grant of over 19.000 dollars from ACN agreed on Aug.6th, will provide food, bedding and clothing for flood victims receiving help from the Missionaries of St. Thomas the Apostle. In a message to ACN, Fr. Tom Rafferty, Parish priest of the Holy Name Parish in Nowshera, described an urgent need for medical supplies to curb an out-break of malaria, dysentery, scabies and other skin rashes, typhoid, cholera and other potential health epidemics. The priest said the appeals coming from Nowshera are becoming more desperate with each passing day. Fr. Rafferty also said the floods have caused a great loss of life, and entire villages have been washed away. Described as the worst monsoon rains in 80 years, reports say that at least 1.600 people died in the floods an an estimated 4 and a half million people have been affected by the floods so far.
