Pope appoints Indian Cardinal to Congregation for Worship
(July 06,2010) Indian Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, is among the
new members appointed on Tuesday by Pope Benedict XVI for the Congregation of Divine
Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Among the eight new members is also
French Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, Archbishop of Bordeaux, and an Indonesian Bishop
Aloysius Maryadi Sutris-naat-maka of Palang- ka-raya. The Congregation for Divine
Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments is the department of the Roman Curia
that handles most affairs relating to liturgical practices of the Latin-rite Catholic
Church, as distinct from the Eastern Catholic Churches. It also handles some technical
matters relating to the Sacraments. Currently the Prefect of this Congregation
is 64-year-old Spanish Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera .
