President appointed to the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of New Evangelization


(June 30, 2010) Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Italian Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella, as the President of the newly created Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization. The Pope announced this creation of this new council on Monday during the Vespers Celebrated at the Basilica of St Paul Outside the wall, with the purpose of restoring Christian faith in the traditional Christian countries where secularism has set in. The 59 year old Archbishop Fisichella was he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rome in 1976. He was the professor of fundamental theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Rome 12 September 1998 and was appointed Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University January 18, 2002. He has been the Secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith and Consulter of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On June 17, 2008 the Pope appointed him President of the Pontifical Academy for Life at the same time elevating the dignity of archbishop. The new Pontifical Council dedicated to a renewed evangelisation will be the 12th in the Vatican. Besides Pontifical Councils there are also nine Congregations.
