Oregon Native Appointed Papal ‘Ceremoniere’


(30 Jun 10 – RV) On Wednesday Pope Benedict XVI appointed Oregon native, Fr John Richard Cihak a member of the Papal ceremonial staff. He will assist Master of Papal Ceremonies, Msgr. Guido Marini in the organisation and execution of all liturgical celebrations presided over by the Holy Father.

Father Cihak was ordained a priest by Archbishop John Vlazny at St. Mary Cathedral, Portland in June of 1998 and took his first parish assignment at St. Anne Church in Grants Pass.

He has served as a pastor, professor and has served as the confessor of Postulants for the Missionaries of Charity in Rome.

Also Wednesday Pope Benedict XVI has named Father Arthur Kennedy, 68, and Father Peter J. Uglietto, 58, priests of the Archdiocese of Boston and both seminary rectors, as auxiliary bishops of Boston. The pope also accepted the resignation of Boston Auxiliary Bishop Emilio Allué, SDB, 75, from the office of auxiliary bishop.

Bishop-elect Kennedy has been rector of St. John Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts; Bishop-elect Uglietto has been rector of Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts.

And finally Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Blase Cupich, 61, of Rapid City, South Dakota, to the Diocese of Spokane, Washington, and accepted the resignation of Bishop William Skylstad, 76, from pastoral governance of the diocese.

Bishop Cupich, who has been Bishop of Rapid City since 1998, was born March 19, 1949.

As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Bishop Cupich served on the Subcommittee on the Translation of Scripture Text and was a member of the Task Force on Promotion of Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. He currently chairs the Committee on Protection of Children and Young People.
