Mangalore Diocese sets up Legal Cell

(June 09,2010) In southern India’s Karnataka State, Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore blessed and inaugurated a Diocesan Legal Cell on Monday at Milagres centre building. In his inaugural address the bishop stressed the need of such a legal cell to assist people who have legal problems. A true and fair legal guidance is the need of the hour, he said. Fr Francis Assisi D’Almeida has been appointed director of the Legal Cell, which is set up to provide legal assistance, education and guidance to the Christian community, and the poor and the needy in the diocese.
Some of the objectives of the Cell are to maintain up-to-date all the required legal documents of every parish of the Diocese of Mangalore; to provide legal awareness especially on new laws and notifications; to form arbitration committee to settle disputes related to the Catholics in the Diocese of Mangalore and to try to resolve them out of court, and to fight collectively against the violation of Human Rights and Minority Rights.
