(May 28, 2010) The quest for personal gains at the cost of the common good is the
evil that needs to be overcome in politics and society, as it corrodes public institutions
and impedes the full development of human beings. Pope Benedict XVI made the remark
on Friday to Benin’s new ambassador to the Holy See, Comlanvi Theodore Loko who presented
his credentials to the Pontiff at the start of his mission. Pope Benedict underscored
how combating corruption in politics helps the principle of equality take root in
the conscience of a nation. According to him promotion of brotherhood helps create
an essential condition for social stability and development. He said fraternity
must also lead to the search for justice, the lack of which is always a cause for
social tensions and many negative consequences. The Holy Father therefore appealed
to politicians and those engaged in the economic and social spheres to be a watchful
conscience that guarantees transparency in their structures, and an ethics that animates
the life of every society. “They must be just,” the Pep insisted , adding, “Justice
always accompanies brotherhood.” Pope Benedict also touched upon the sacredness of
life, saying it calls for necessary legislation for protection.
