Lasallian Students Bring Rights of Child Debate to UN

(01 May 10 – RV) This past week Lasallian Students have been taking part in a special conference on the rights of the child at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The event was sponsored by the UN in collaboration with the Holy See and the Christian Brothers Conference of the United States and Toronto.
The defence and promotion of the rights of children is a major focus of concern for the Catholic Lasallian mission. The 2009-2010 academic year starts the beginning of a three-year catechetical effort on the intersection of the Lasallian educational mission and social justice promotion and advocacy, with the ultimate objective that the US Senate will ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 2011-2012. With the rights of children as the major focus of concern, this regional initiative aims to integrate the educational, formational and transformational aspects of evangelization and catechesis in a Lasallian context.
The Lasallian Student Convocation at the United Nations e held at the UN headquarters in New York City, included speakers and discussions with UN officials, diplomatic ambassadors, and NGO leaders; interactive workshops on global issues; a leadership and social justice advocacy seminar; a tour of the UN; cross-cultural exchange; and building connections among fellow Lasallians.
Br. Robert Schieler Regional is General Councillor for USA/TORONTO. He spoke to us about the mission, and about the when children’s rights are denied even in first world nations:
