Sri Lankan Bishops appeal prior to general elections
(April, 07, 2010) A very special appeal to all the people of Sri Lanka, especially
to the Catholic Community was made by Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo, prior
to the country’s general elections that begin on Thursday. It is the responsibility
and the sacred obligation of all patriotic citizens to exercise their right to vote,
as we do not get many opportunities to have our say in public, he said. The Archbishop
reminded every citizen, the Catholic candidates and the Catholic faithful in particular,
to desist from any malpractices, violence and interference with the law at this momentous
time. We should be scrupulously fair and helpful in making this election trouble free,
so to ensure peace and tranquillity to enable officials to do their duty in accordance
with their conscience and the rule of law, said Archbishop Ranjith. He urged that
high ethical standards be maintained, especially during the time between polling and
the announcement of results. He hoped that those invested with the duty of organising
the elections will fulfil their tasks responsibly. Exhorting not to be swayed by empty
slogans and banners, Archbishop Ranjith exhorted voters to elect men and women of
integrity, who uphold democratic values and have respect for diversity, be in relation
to gender, ethnicity, age or religion.
