(March 27, 2010) Pope Benedict XVI will usher in the Holy Week, leading the Palm
Sunday ceremony and Mass in St. Peter’s Square this morning. The Holy Week that
commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus is the culmination of the
40-day Lenten period when Christians fast, pray and do penance in preparation for
their most solemn feast, Easter, or Resurrection of Christ. Palm Sunday commemorates
the triumphant entry of Jesus in Jerusalem, days before he is handed over to his enemies
to be crucified. On Palm Sunday the Church also marks the annual World Youth Day
at the diocesan level - a tradition begun by Pope John Paul. This year, the 25th
anniversary of the annual event, the theme is “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit
eternal life?” On Monday, March 29, Pope Benedict will celebrate a Mass in St. Peter’s
Basilica, to mark the 5th death anniversary of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.
The late Pope died on April 2nd, 2005, but since this year the day falls on Good Friday
the anniversary is being anticipated to Monday.
