New Bishop for the Archdiocese of Verapoly, India


(February 20, 2010) The Holy Father appointed Bishop Francis Kallarackal, until now bishop of Kottapuram as the Archbishop of Verapoly (India). Archdiocese of Verapoly, once known as "Malabar Vicariate" is one of the oldest Archdioceses of India. The seat of the archdiocese has been vacant since Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, O.C.D., passed away on the 26th of October 2009. The new Archbishop Francis Kallarackal was born on October 10, 1941 and was ordained priest on June 29, 1968. He was nominated Bishop of Kottapuram on August 1, 1987. He is the vice-Chairman of Kerala Catholic Bishop's Council, member of Board of Directors, St. John's Medical College, Bangalore and Chairman - KCBC's Commission for Justice and Peace.
