Pope Benedict XVI’s Address to Italian Police in Vatican
(January 7, 2010) “Your commitment would contribute to peace and security to pilgrims
and visitors arriving at the centre of Catholic faith and allows them the necessary
spiritual support in their visit to the tomb of Peter and the Basilica, said Pope
Benedict XVI. He was addressing the Italian Police Personnel serving in the Vatican
on Thursday, the 7th of January in Rome. The Pope thanked the Police for
the diligent work that they carry out with their watchful and discreet presence around
the Vatican. The Holy Father said that their warm presence creates a favourable atmosphere
for people who intend to meet the Successor of St Peter. During the Christmas Season,
continued the Pontiff, many did appreciate their humble but essential work, because
the pilgrimage to Rome is for each visitor a unique opportunity to experience the
joy of the faith and the values of brotherhood. Their warmth of welcome and mutual
respect is a great example for all, since God has become a Child out of love for us.
Appreciating their cooperation the Pope said that the Lord would reward them in plenty.
Their faith, the tradition of their loyalty and constant generosity will help them
to find in this sensitive service always new reason to have satisfying and positive
experience in their professional and personal lives. Finally granting his Apostolic
Blessing wishing them and their families for the New Year, Pope Benedict said that
their Patron Mary, Virgin Most Faithful accompany them and the entire force, and
particularly those in different countries around the world engaged in the delicate
mission of peace.
