(December 28, 2009) India’s national leaders have greeted the nation on the occasion
of Christmas wishing that people be imbued with the Christmas spirit of love, tolerance
and understanding. In a brief message, Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh said that the
spirit of Christmas is synonymous with tolerance and caring. In his message, Singh
noted that "the festival is a celebration of peace, love and hope and a time to rejoice
in the company of family and friends.” “The spirit of Christmas strengthens the values
of brotherhood, tolerance and caring." He wished that the spirit of Christmas be with
all his countrymen throughout the New Year. The President of India, Pratibha Patil,
in a message said, "the festival of Christmas reminds all of us of the profound message
of Lord Jesus Christ to promote peace, unity and harmony in society and amongst one
another.” “May this year's Christmas inspire us on the path of mutual understanding
for the overall development of the nation," she added. Indian Vice President, Hamid
Ansari said, "Jesus Christ showed mankind the path of compassion, tolerance, love,
brotherhood and sacrifice.” “His message has the power to lift the human race from
ignorance, violence and moral decay to a life of peace, virtue and spiritual fulfilment,"
he added.
