Christians observe fast to protest Attack on community
(December 09, 2009) Christians observed a daylong fast December 7 at the Kanyakumari
Collectorate in Tamil nadu, India, condemning the unabated attacks on the community
members and their properties in the district. Members of the All India Christian Progressive
Association headed by its South Zone convener, Theodore Sam, observed the fast protesting
the nefarious acts of some fanatical antisocial elements bent on disrupting communal
harmony, social peace and the inter-religious goodwill in Kanyakumari. In a statement,
Sam pointed out that Christian churches of various denominations had been the target
of attacks. Statues of saints and revered altars have been smashed; religious articles
and Bibles burnt and church buildings damaged. To top it all, a church belonging to
the Church of South India had been bombed recently. He said the lethargic attitude
of the police in booking the culprits involved in the attacks had emboldened them
to continue to perpetrate atrocities against Christians and their worship places.
He urged the district administration and the police to trace the culprits and take
speedy action on them. He also sought safety and security for Christians.
