JRS Warn of Possible Revolt if Food Cuts Prolonged in Nepal
(08 Nov 09 - RV) The Jesuit Refugee Service is urging the United Nations to stand
by its promise not to prolong food cuts to the men women and children in the refugee
camps in Nepal beyond November 15th.
The 90,000 Bhutanese people
housed in these camps since the 1990’s are the first to feel the crunch of the drop
in donor nations funding to the World Food Programme, who were forced to cut food
rations there by 200 grams of rice a day.
A senior WFP official recently
visited the camps to see the situation first hand.
Former JRS regional
director, Fr Amal Raj says that the food cut is seriously undermining repatriation
and education programs and if prolonged could result in revolts.
